I want to weave my own wool tartan

I can probably gain access to a hand loom to make my
own tartan. Can anyone help me out by telling me
what weight of thread and number of threads per inch
warp I will need to make a 16 ounce fabric?

Also, for those of you who have made your own wool kilts,
do you wash the fabric first? If so, what temperature water?

I think we've found a new definition for ambition!
I've made one wool kilt and I didn't wash the fabric.

Ambitious, indeed! Good luck! Sorry, although my ancestors were weavers, I've never touched the loom myself. Perhaps Matt Newsome or one of our other Tartan scholars can help you out!
