Actually he's quite serious. I used to ride a lot and I can tell you that I saw them all the time. A blanket will have a tendency to slide across the leather. A fitted wool pad is the way to go.

I know he's serious,there's still a funny side to it. I've seen the pads your talking about.I had completly forgotten them though,till you mentioned them.
