Well, I talked with the FedEx guy and he said because it was textiles (a wool jacket and waistcoat) that a tax ID number had to be filed. So I gave him one and he said it should be to me by the end of the week. Now I wonder how long I have to wait before the customs charge makes its way to me?:x

From now on I will request that any packages coming from overseas NOT use FedEx if at all possible.

Just avoid the courier services like Fedex and UPS. Stick to the postal service and you'll be better off. Those courier services charge outrageous fees for collecting duty and taxes, usually a large multiple of what they collect.

That is both true & false. Imports for resale have to have that filed, but purchase for personal use or gifts are exempt. Oddly enough a purchase for personal use is exempt up to $200 and a gift only up to $100.

I thought Wompet said that kilts were duty free. Why is FedEx trying to charge $80 for one??

Afraid i dont recall what exactly the $80.00 charge was for. Something related to 'duty' or 'customs' or 'processing' of said duty/customs... or "some such mahaha".

Yep. Customs can be a nightmare sure enough. The last kilt I ordered from Scotland arrived with a bill for nearly $100 that I hadn't anticipated. But what really frosts me is that the tariffs were for the protection of the domestic textile industry which has been dead and gone for years. Besides, how many U.S. mills ever produced, or wanted to produce, tartan? No, gentlemen, it is just another wallet grab.

Some time I'll tell the tale of the automobile I inherited from my father who lived in Montreal. But for now suffice it to say that I had to get my Congressman involved to force Customs to get real.

The tracking now shows that it has departed the FedEx facility in New Jersey early this morning, so at least it's on the move again.
