The Ozarks...

Royce,
You've just described the Ozarks to a "T". Vance Randolph, the famous Ozark folklorist who collected songs, poems, stories, etc. for 40 or more years here in the Ozarks was one of the few "outsiders" to be accepted by the hillfolk (he was from SE Kansas) -- I remember reading a story in his book "Ozark Magic and Folklore" where a man who had lived 50 years in the Ozarks, but had not been born here, was still considered an "outsider" by his neighbours!
Cheers,
Todd

Somebody should inform him that crow doesn't taste that bad... sorta like chicken, actually.

Nathan will be speaking on WMUA.org radio out of Boston. It's UMass radio at 11:15 central time. I didn't know if you wanted to know.

I know a bit about the hill people. My dad was 16 years old when they moved from Bear Creek Holler in north west Arkansas to Oklahoma. When I was wee we made several trips up there to take grandpaw and grandmaw "home" to visit the folks they left behind. Sadly it's all under several hundred feet of water now. Bull Shoals Lake flooded all the hills and hollers where all the stories I grew up on took place.

So, apparently he does have special permission to wear the kilt to his Prom? I agree with him though, the dress code needs to be officially clarified so that this doesn't happen again.
Good interview.

Good interview.
Very mature for an 18 year old!! Most kids that age would be happy to just get their way...ie permission to wear his kilt to the prom. Nathan is holding out for everyone that wants to be able to wear formal cultural attire. Shows the begining of character. That laddie is growing up to be a son to be proud of.
