    Kilted New Years - DENIED!

This New Years Eve we decided to go to a country bar called Montana's in San Dimas. When we arrived, the doorman said "I dont know if I can let you in with that"

    "With what?" I ask.

"We have a no shorts policy" he says.

Fabulous, were I wearing shorts. Instead I was in a kilt with a very nice sweater, a rather nice looking dress/casual ensemble. Definately better than the jeans and T-shirts that were accepted attire for the club (and women of course had no problems entering when wearing knee length or shorter skirts)

I asked to speak to the manager, who again stated they had a no shorts policy. Again I stated I wasnt in shorts, so what was the problem? He then relied on the "we have the right to refuse service to anyone" refrain, which of course they do. Still, there was no call to refuse me entrance other than their own personal ignorance.
The manager then refused to give me his name or the phone number of the club. Thats fine though, as the number is on their website www.montanasnightlife.com so I'll be calling and emailing with my complaints.

By way of contrast though, when we left and went to a different club for the evening (Cowboy Country in Lakewood) not only was I welcomed, there was already ANOTHER guy inside with a kilt on! Vast bit of difference, and about $100 in drinks and such that the first place missed out on, plus all chance of future visits.

Could we wind up with another crusade against the "anti-kilters". While, I do not feel that being denied entrance to a bar is in the same category as the Warmack incident. I do think that it is an insult to all of Scottish descent amd to all us who wear kilts, for any reason.

I haven't sent an email yet, ( I kind of want to think about it for a while) but I did copy the email address. I had a little difficulty in locating it.

    To arms! to arms!

    Email send

    Dear Sir,

    Happy New Year!

On New Year's Eve a person wearing the kilt was denied entrance to your bar, because of "improper dress".

The kilt IS proper dress...worn by proud men who value their ancient Scottish or Irish heritage.

    Thanks for reading,

    Theres one from the UK

Dear Sir I understand you do not admit men in Kilts !

Can you please explain why ?

I can see no reason for this as I’ am sure you allow women in any kind of costume in !

I think you owe an apology to all men in Kilts !

I sent the e-mail that follows.

    Dear Sir:

It is my understanding that on New Year's Eve a gentleman wearing a kilt was denied entrance to your club because of a "no shorts allowed" policy. When this gentleman asked to speak to the manager, the manager repeat the no shorts allowed policy, and also stated the bar's right to refuse service to anyone.

Please be advised that a kilt is not shorts. It is a male garment that has been worn for centuries, and continues to be accepted male attire throughout the world. The kilt has a proud history of defending freedom against oppression in both WWI and WWII. Also, all branches of the US military have pipe and drum units that wear the kilt.

I request that you reconsider your policies, and allow the kilt to be worn at your bar. I sincerely believe that you will find most men that wear the kilt to be proud of the history of this garment, and wear it in a dignified manner.

    Thank you

And mine's in their inbox now too headed Boy Did You Screw Up

You certainly have a right to set your own clubs rules.

To chose to deny access to a customer for wearing the most masculine of all male garments, the kilt, was a huge mistake.

you're getting the kind of publicity you don't really want...

I know the man you denied personally. Not only did you miss out on a fine customer and their money - spent at competitors of yours instead...and he was the Second kilted gent at that club last night...you are now internationally known to thousands for your decision.

What you are missing is that kilts are experiencing a fashion resurgance. I own a denim kilt...same thing as denim jeans...only my boy parts are FREE...

Seems so silly to deny a man access to your club because his balls aren't bound up like an ancient Chinese woman's feet.

But its your club...you be what you wanna be...

Negative publicity is still publicity. Maybe it'll work for you.

Have you considered that they were simply avoiding a potential problem? They may have been denying you entrance simply to head off any possible conflicts with the other patrons.
Away back in 1989 I was working weekends as a bouncer.I remember one night a guy showed up in a full tux.I didn't let him in because I KNEW someone would say something and there would be trouble. By refusing him entry I was able to keep things peaceful.

    Here's a thought ...

If you were regimental (as I was down in HB last night) you could've lifted your kilt and showed him you weren't wearing shorts !!!

CT - a tad bit hung over this "in between storms" day.
