A chap of that calibre or even larger turned up a few years ago at a gathering, swathed from top to toe in the brightest of bright Red Robertson--quite terrifying, and creating an overpowering need for sunglasses-I think he was from Carolina!
Suggest that a well cut traditional kilt will look fine, but would advise one of the more muted tartans.
