That's actually a goose's head. The pipe maker was formerly a silver-smith and he uses a handmade 3-dimensional goose's head as his maker's mark. It is definitely original and not to be confused with anyone else!

He makes his pipes under the name L'Anatra Della Uovo Dell Oro - meaning the goose that laid the golden egg!

This is an old picture, but I thought it was sort of fitting. The background is my greatkilt I still have all these pipes, but the bent Dr. G is broken, as is the cob, and I've added a few pipes since the pic was taken.

It looks pretty close on DC banning smoking effective Jan 2007.

Banning smoking within the confines of the District of Columbia or banning smoking in all locales in the U.S.of.A.?

I smoked a pipe, cigarettes, and cigars for a number of years. I quit the works cold turkey 15 years ago. I had 2 major beefs with smoking a pipe. First was the juice that collected at the bottom of the bowl... nasty stuff if you draw some of it into the mouth. Second was the embers that ruined several shirts, ties, and upholstery. I would be very afraid of burning small holes in an expensive kilt.

As romantic as pipes may be, none shall pass betwixt these lips again.

And Prince George's County & Howard County in Maryland are doing the same as well. I often gripe about the Commonwealth of Virginia but at least some concept of individual rights are being protected here.

I have a couple pipes that have juice problems, and I don't think there's anything more disgusting than getting that juice in your mouth. Yuck! Fortunately, it's only a couple and I can usually avoid it.

I've only had embers fly out of the bowl once that I'm aware of. It was on a very windy day, and I saw them leave the bowl. It was a first for me.

In "So You're Going to Wear the Kilt" the author states that besides the sgean dhu, you can put your pipe in your kilt hose. I wouldn't ever put my pipe in my sock, but has anyone else ever done this?

    Nick,
I reenact WWII with the 2nd Bn, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. I've been known to stash my pipe in my kilt hose at an event if I'm wearing the kilt for full dress, etc.

A lot of "juice" problems are often caused by either poor pipe design, a very aromatic tobacco or both.

I have one pipe that is always "juicy" even with a seriously dry Balkan blend. But then, that's what pipe cleaners do really well. Just insert one down the shank if you start to hear the gurgle and then remove once it's done its job as an absorbant. But then, it's a cheap pipe.

The only other pipe I have that I've ever tasted juice from, is from my Kirsten when I waited too long to clean the interior. I smoke that one a lot when I'm in my workshop. Since the body is aircraft grade aluminum it can survive any abuse I give it when I'm working on glass.

If you've never seen a Kirsten, this is what one looks like:

I bought one that looks just like that, but that photo is from their website (http://www.kirstenpipe.com/default.shtml).

Anyway, a positive and a negative of the pipe is that the body acts as a condenser to collect juice. Most of the time it means a very dry smoke. But if you get your head angled just the wrong way and you are a bit overdue on cleaning and draining the pipe you'll get a nasty taste of juice. :-x

I just don't understand how people chew tobacco.

Anyway, as for flying embers, the only damage ever done to a kilt of mine wasn't caused by my pipe. Never had it send embers flying. But I did catch some cigarette embers that flew out one car window and into my car. Thankfully no damage was done as I acted quickly.

Also, I don't think I'd want to put a pipe in my mouth that's been in my sock, I don't care how high up on the calf it is.

But I have been known to keep pipes in my inside coat pockets.
