Mackays and Sutherlands...
Both were out in the forth and final Jacobite Rebellion.
Actually, the Mackays & Sutherlands supported the government against the Jacobites in the '45.
Cheers,
Todd

Geez! That's what I get for reading this stuff at work. Our proxy server blocks sites that the company deems "inappropriate". Apparently, it thinks your blog is “inappropriate”.

Well, all he said was they were out, he didn't specify which side of the muir they stood on. ;)

Phil,
Congratulations on your new blog! I still am somewhat of a Luddite when it comes to journaling on the net, but I do admire those that do.

Would love to see the rest of the pics Glassman but I too will not register.
Thus far my inbox is mostly free of spam and I am working VERY hard to keep it that way. What I could see looks well done and well written.

"Out" actually refers to clans who supported the Jacobites, not the other way around. A clan was said have "come out" for one of the Pretenders, either Charles or his father James.
Check out Charles Mackinnon's "Scottish Highlanders", a nifty little book from Barnes and Noble. In the back, he provides an Appendix entitled "The State of the Clans in 1745", which lists the major clans and their affiliation. Mackinnon says:
Those who actually rose for the Prince are marked '(OUT)'...
The list comes from a list compiled by Lord Duncan Forbes of Culloden. Neither Mackay or Sutherland are listed as "out".
Regards,
Todd
