I think it's exceptionally difficult to judge a tartan on the basis of a computer-generated image. Seeing a swatch of the actual fabric is really about the only way to judge whether you'd like it or not, and, even then, 6x6 swatch is tough to judge. If you do get a swatch, though, put it on the back of your couch and stand 10' or more away from it to decide if you really like it or not. The colors up close are always separate and distinct. At a distance, though, the colors kind of merge, and sometimes that merging is felicitous and sometimes it isn't. For example, a tartan with a lot of red and blue can look purple at a distance, and you you might or might not like that.
