I avoid "Scottish" themed shirts/hats/etc. for casual wear. It belabors the obvious. I think the kilt says it loud and clear. Matt Newsome has a great article covering this topic on his website.
On a related note, it is interesting that "kilting" has become a verb. It even sounds normal, until you apply the concept to other other articles of clothing. Hatting? Sweatering?
My english teacher mother would be puzzled.
