Velcro closures are ok as long as the hook face isn't exposed to the sock. I made some a couple of years ago with a small hook patch that overlapped a larger loop patch for adjustment. Worked well... no damage.
I agree, i have had the same set of flashings for over 4 years now and they have not destroyed my kilt hose. They are much easier on the legs in my opinion than the metal hooks.
