Personally, I'm not enamored with that extra pocket sticking out on the front, but if it works for you, go for it.

I've taken to wearing my Freelander on the side, Therefore, it's not in the "traditional" spot, but it works for me, and that's what's important.

I think, if you've already broken with tradition by wearing a contemporary kilt, ...or a modern shirt, ...or athletic shoes or boots, ...etc., then it's perfectly fine to adapt something else to your style as well.

Keep in mind, that if you leave it loose, so that it hangs at the "proper" level in front, that it likely won't hang flat. You may have to cinch it up or swing it around to the hip anyway.
