Ok Patrick,

The thing with single malts is that there are different ones for different palates. Everyone has a different palate and what one likes another won't. It doesn't mean that it's a bad single malt just hat it is not suited for your palate.
Here are some good single malts I've tried in my day.
Laphroig 10
Oban 14
Dalwhinnie 15
Springbank 10
Ardbeg 10
Talisker
Lagavulin
Macallan 12
Lammerlaw 10(Single Malt Whisky from New Zealand no longer in production)
Glenfidditch 15 year Solera

Happy Birthday!
BBQ goes great with a Stout. Single malt has plenty of backbone to stand up to even a strong sauce, but I think I'd have a cheaper single malt because, like you said, you would lose some of the nuances.
We just had a single malt Islay tasting at my buddy's birthday party. We ran off a bunch of the whisky tasting mats from the Laphroaig website. We had Bowmore, Laphroaig, and McClelland's. I'll post pics and our tasting notes in a different post tomorrow.

Thank you to all the birthday well-wishers! I had a very nice birthday!
On a very sad note.. My brother passed away today.. He was 52. He has been not in the best of heath due to he Epilepsy medicine being out of whack. He was on the road to recovery.. When took a real bad fall and passed..
So if I could ask you all to hoist a dram for my dearly departed brother, I would greatly appreciate it!
Cheers to my brother Steve!
Sorry to be a bummer but I need to let it out..

Big Paul, I'll definitely toast the memory of your brother. Your post gave me something of a start, when I put it together. I roomed two quarters of my freshmen year in college with a Steve Murray. That Steve would also be 52 years old, now. He hailed from Stamford, CT, though.
Sincerest condolences to you and all of your family.

Right now I am working on:
Dalmore 12 year (it's great)
Dalwhinnie 15 year (fantastic whisky one of my personal favourites)
Highland Park 12 year (we just started to get to know each other. Very nice)
Laphroaig 10 year (WOW!)
McClelland's Highland. (it's alright for filling the flask and giving to guests)
and I think there is still some Drambuie left
I can't say I have any un-opened right now, as I like to try them all at. They each have a certain flavour and I am never sure which one I may want when the mood strikes me. I will raise a dram to your brother tonight Paul.
