    US Flag code

The Us flag code is clear on this issue for display/ wearing of the U.S.Flag.
most of the flag hooplah post 9-11 Was a clear violation of the code.
These links may provide some guidance. As far as other countries flags it still is Insulting to see the flag as clothing. type the U.S. Flag code and you will get lots of information.

I think section d refers to altering the flag in such a way as to make it a garment. I think Kid Rock made a flag into a poncho and wore it at the Super Bowl one year, but it may have been just a concert. That's an example of what they're talking about.

I like the kilt, but I rather doubt I'd ever own one. If I'm going to get a tank, it's either going to be tartan or solid.

    • (a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
    • (b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
    • (c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
    • (d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
    • (e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.
    • (f) The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.
    • (g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
    • (h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
    • (i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
    • (j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
    • (k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
Society will tell you that the flag is only a piece of cloth and it's OK to do anything you want with it. Good judgement and common sense should prevail.

    Temporary Thread Jack

After reading all this, it makes me wonder how many of the people who were so patriotic for the USA after 9/11 coudl be hauled off to jail for teh way they are treating thier flags & flag bedecked paraphanalia now...
also what about all the ads run by the various politcal parties showing flags left right & center...

Methinks someone needs to take a serious look at the flag code book and its validity today...

We now return you to your regular thread.

Isn't a tartan a symbol of a family or district? What is the difference? You sit on both. Is it disrespectful to sit down while kilted?

Tell me about it. I have been contemplating making a short documentary for years called "Burn This" interspersing Congressional "Flag burning ammendment" footage, actual Flag Code exerpts, and footage of how the flag is flown patrioticacally (tattered, rained on, faded scraps on banks really kill me).

I think it all depends on how the wearer is wearing the clothing. A kilt looks lik eits worn as a symbol of pride and heritage, so I dont think they try to disrespect the flag by doing so. However, this is a very subjective matter. After all, its their flag too.
