also what about all the ads run by the various politcal parties showing flags left right & center...
Methinks someone needs to take a serious look at the flag code book and its validity today...
We now return you to your regular thread.
The code is the guide for all handling and display of the Stars and Stripes. It does not impose penalties for misuse of the United States Flag.

I'm not a big fan of that kilt for several reasons. One is the matter of respect.
The other is that to me it looks like your a$$ is now the location of buried treasure on a pirate's map. Either that or has a target on it.
But back to whether it is appropriate or not... Personally I don't really think that it is truly a flag. It's merely an optical illusion. If you unfolded the pleats to see the actual woven clothe it would not be a saltire at all, it only looks like one when pleated. Rather like those old fold-in pictures in Mad Magazine.
And since the appearance of the saltire is an optical illusion, then having it on a kilt is not really as bad as say turning real flag into a poncho (which is downright despicable).
That being said, it's still in bad taste, gimmicky and not to my liking.

Actually, at first I kind of liked the kilt, but the thought that it would be disrespectful to Scotish to wear it did cross my mind. However, the more I looked at it, the more it just looked like a reference to the flag because of the mutiple pattern lines on it.
I wouldn't want someone to wear the American flag made into a kilts, but if it was just a kilt with stripes and stars on it I wouldn't have a big problem with it, provided it was just a reference. (granted, that would be one ugly kilt)

Scotsman Alex Beaton sees nothing disrespectful or tasteless about it. There are no photos of him wearing the Saltire Collection on his website (a nicely done site in Flash, btw, http://www.alexbeaton.com/a.html ), but he does provide a link to the collection.
I also see nothing disrespectful or tasteless about the kilt. Perhaps it boils down to personal outlooks. I've seen the kilt in real life (on Alex Beaton, in fact), & it's really quite handsome.

I've helped decorate many a dining hall in the Air Force, and raised many a flag (hah hah...) myself, so I can tell you if you were to make a red/white striped pleats and blue/starred apron kilt, or anything involving the design, then as long as you did not make it out of an actual and official US flag, there's nothing wrong whatsoever with it. Otherwise they wouldn't have R/W/B patterned buntings, shirts, etc. When Abbie Hoffman was arrested for wearing a flag-styled shirt, the police were in the wrong for using that reason- because it was styled like a flag, not made from one.
You can still buy shirts from major companies today like that one:

Not to mention Uncle Sam's own colorful striped and starred outfit seen countless times.
So putting it on a kilt is no more or less respectful, (depending on your views on patriotic design/color schemes over one's bottom half or whole body) but wither way is not illegal or even against tradition.
EDIT- and I see someone already brought this up, sorry, I must have skipped a page while I was reading.

No, but those who behave without honor are honorless, anyone can disagree with me, it's not an issue but when tradition and honor have stood for countless years and someone comes along to tarnish what was fought and won just to make a quich buck, that is without honor.

That sounds like a great idea to me. I don't mind the "stars and stripes" clothing so much (as long as it isn't made from an actual flag) but I get really tired of some of the abuses commited in the name of "Patriotism". In the Harley world I see lots of companies who use the flag to try and "out American" their competition. Then there are the "good ol boys" who festoon their trucks with flags. There's one yahoo locally that has nine full size flags arrayed on his truck. They've been there day in and day out for several years. They're faded and torn to shreds and he's ready to go to blows with any body who suggests that he's overdone it a bit, any good patriot should have that many flags on his car (while he's driving drunk, jumping curbs, and engaging in road rage). I particularly love the guy with a battered home-made flat bed an over-sized American flag on one side and an over-sized Confederate battle flag on the otherside. Both flags are shredded and grease stained from laying in the car parts and trash strapped to the bed of his truck. What are you going to do with somebody that dense?
Sorry, seems to be a rant day for me today. Please return to your normal programming.
