You've gotten a lot of good advice here so I'll make this quick. My Partner and I each have a 30 GIG video iPod ($299.00) and I highly recommend it. Also add the $69.00 or so for the Apple Care program (DO NOT buy a third party extended warranty for an iPOD. You can get a warranty after the purchase from Apple's website.)
What ever you buy I recommend getting on that handles music AND video (I'm in telecom and what's coming down the road warrants the money.) And deffinitly invest in an "upgraded" set of headphones. The stock ones (at least from Apple) are not very er.....good.
