A very simple day sgian dhub. I like the understatedness of it, since it's simply a utility knife, but I do have to say the carving on yours, Nick, is incredible.

Andrew.
There is a simple beauty in the grain of the wood, almost a subtle work of art by the Creator.

Nick, yours is a very finely crafted tool, and I like the scrollwork on the handle, but Andrew, for me that rubbed, oiled, plain wood handle is gorgeous. Something about the simple beauty of it.

Andrew, that's a beautiful knife! It's also just what I'm looking for for day wear. I want to make my own, but may I ask where you got yours? Also, what's the pommel cap made of? I'm not sure from the picture.

Andrew's Sghian is really great...so low key and basic. Is it a rosewood handle?
I've seen Sghians like that and always wondered how nice they really were...hard to tell from internet photos just how good the materials used are. I thought that I'd wait until the next highland games and look at what the dealers bring with...it WOULD be nice if my family popped for a GENEROUS FATHER'S DAY PRESENT...hint...hint....
Till then I'm working on a "mod" to a stock boot knife that I've found...it's not dissimilar to the increasingly-harder-to-find mini-culloden but the modern material handle look right out of place...working on finding some thin leather straps to wrap it with. It seems that kilt-wearing and knife-fancying go hand in hand (at least among the members of this forum) so I'm very quietly sneaking this one past my wife...."...another knife? How many do you need?" ....can you ever have too many knives?
If I ever figure out how to get the Yahoo photo business working, I'll try to post some before and after photos.

I don't have any details about my knife (maker, etc.), because I picked it up at the local kilt shop, and all it had attached to it was a price tag. I do know that the pommel cap is horn, and the bolster is ebony. It came unsharpened, and I ground down the edge myself, and now it has quite a nice edge on it.
I still need a dress sgian dhub, and I'm pretty sure I want one of Rab's creations in a damascus blade.

Sweet knife, dude...
I don't get to carry a knife here at school, so I haven't bought a sgian dubh or any other knife yet.

Ooooh, yeah, man, I don't recommend that. Zero tolerance policies are hard to overcome or reason with. I read one story about a kid who got suspended for a year because he wrote his initials on a drawing he did in his notes - the teacher thought it was a gang symbol. I hate to think about what they'd do to you if you brought a knife, real or fake.

Yep I'm glad I finished school before they got so uptight.
Most of the people I hung out with carried pocket knives or butterfly knives, the teachers even knew it (butterfly knives usually stuck out of the pocket a little so they could be seen) & no one really cared much.
Then again it was not exactly uncommon to see shotguns in the back window of trucks in the parking lot during the fall because some of us would go bird hunting after school.
