Alan makes a wonderful point. However, if you see me in my kilt, then know that you are seeing more of my true self. I feel more at home with myself (if that makes sense) when I am out and about kilted.

Ok I've GOT to get some new smileys!!

Glen, You've become very existential lately. To much whiskey?

To answer the question..... Yes, it is who I am. Strangely enough it was a long time in coming. I've always been just a bit different and I tried to ignore that and er...pretend that wasn't the case. When I first had the guts to go out in a kilt the world actually changed for me.

Now when we go out to a party or some function whether I'm kilted or not it's not the intimidating (and yes somewhat miserable) affair that it used to be. Now I... well...I'm not the life of the party but lets just say that I take charge of my personal space and enjoy the people I'm meeting and overall have a good time.

Not very erudite but there it is in a nutshell.

    Know thyself.

It's not just a saying. Trying to figure out exactly what it means, though.

Incidentally, it is a quotation from Scripture (in the Orthodox Bible), also, not just an ancient Greek axiom!

I think a kilt says much more about my true self than anything else I've ever worn. It shows that I'm a traditionalist but also a non-comformist. It shows that I'm comfortable with who I am, but also concerned that I am comfortable. And most of all, it's an open invitation to anyone to come over and talk to me. I'm always ready with an open ear for anyone at anytime.

I don't know if it's a part of me. but , I like it. It is a way that I have learned to get along in this world. It shows people that I have a choice and am living and participating in it my way. Not something that someone else wants me to do or be. Besides I've always thought kilts were cool.

Are you trying to tell us what you wear under your Kilt?

    Either way; yea, me too.

    hmmm...true self.....hmmm....

I would say that it is an outward reflection of myself in certain moods. I tend to wear the kilt more often when I am in a positive mood.

But is it directly connect to who I am? I would be different without it, but I would still be. So although, it is linked to my true self, it is not the keystone to me.

LOL !! I hadn't thought of it like that! But I guess if I have on my kilt on a windy day, then sure you would see more of my "true self".

This is a great statement. This is what I was thinking, but I couldn't word it as nicely as you did.

Now that I've had more time to ponder it, let's just say that I like to walk to the beat of my own drummer and never be defined by one thing. Kilts definitely let me do because they definitely aren't "common" garments in the US, you can get them in numerous styles to fit whatever mood I'm in, and quite frankly, they make my butt look good....
