another question, this time about jackets

I also ordered a classic Argyle jacket from the Kilt Store, with the waistcoat. But I don't like the buttons, they are to shiney, at least judging from the pics and what I have seen in stores. I remember some discussions about that on here, but couldn't find them, even with search.
Any way, what do you guys think about relacing them with either black or at the least not shiny silver buttons? I prefer something a bit more understated rather than flashy. Or maybe covering them with something? I may also look at removing the epaulets, pocket flaps (I don't like them on my suits either) and cuffs, but that will wait for the jacket to get here.

My suggestion would be to email Kiltstore and either ask them to swicth the buttons to the plain, or to use the shiny and include some spares of the plain. This way you can switch them based on the event or your preference. My jacket (not from kilt store) came with the shiney buttons, but I got them to send me some of the plain ones as well.

I'm putting some of the Pewter buttons from Three Feathers on my converted Tux jacket. I like the pewter finish and they have several styles to choose from and the price is nice. Shipping was about a week or so but for small quanities they probably have them in stock.

Here's a pic of my jacket for what it's worth. I'm actually looking to put the buttons on the sleeves tonight and as soon as I find a 3 button vest I'll put the small buttons on there. If you copy the image and paste it into word and then brighten it you can see the satin lapels and shape a lot better.

I think that you've hit on the fact that pewter looks somewhat duller but richer than a silver finish. I agree that silver looks a bit too flashy for my taste...pewter is a bit more laid back. Good choice...and that Three Feathers outfit has soem really neat things.

Cavscout, what did you use for the small buttons in the middle?
Is there a chain linking those?

Those are the small buttons from 3 feathers. There is not a chain linking them yet. I need to find a decent length and attach it. If you need a pre-made one though the British shop has them in a standard button.

Somewhere I've read (here on X Marks, maybe?) how to safely dull shiny metal. At some point I was going to post the question, but my DH & DS both like the shiny metal on their sporrans & buckles.

Perhaps, if someone can tell you how, you could just dull down the buttons without having to change them.

If you do not like the buttons, epaulets, cuffs and pocket flaps, why buy the Argyll? After you remove all that stuff, you'll pretty much be left with a Crail. Why not just buy a Crail in the first place?

I know this is a little off-topic but with your Argyle & Daywear Tweed Argyle-style jackets, do you prefer the epaulets to be a flat piece of the same fabric or braided pieces of the same fabric?

Most of the pics I've seen of such jackets have the epaulets as plain strips:

But the one I purchased from Hector Russell has a braided epaulet:

It's kind of hard to see in the picture from their site, but if you look closely enough you'll see the difference.

I've found that I really like the look of braided epaulets but I wondered what others thought.
