I'm not a great reader but one book I could not put down was "The Other Side of the Rainbow" by Moya Brennan (Enya's sister).

Yes they can be considered Bodice rippers, but nobody has mentioned the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon. I really enjoyed the entire series. Especially the second in the series that dealt alot with Culloden and the Rising.

"Rob Roy MacGregor; His Life and Times"; W.H. Murray.

"A Gentleman's Letters from the North of Scotland"; Capt. Edmund Burt,(reprint by Birlinn books, Scotland).

Both excellent looks at traditional Highland society before its fall....
