my sgian and dirk
Both of these were made by my dad. The first two shots are of my dirk:
I tried to get some good shots of my sgian, especially the relief carving my dad did in the antler. However, I failed. And as a photographer, I feel quite humbled by this. In my defence, it was a borrowed digital camera; I still use film (for those that know me, this is very ironic). Anyway... here it is:
The relief carving is of a thistle. Unfortunately, this is the best shot I got from it:

WOW - I'm always blown away by the number of fine craftsmen we have on the board. Beautiful work!

Those are some beautiful pieces Ian! And add the sentimental value to them and those are the best blades in the world.
All this talk has jsut about convinced e to try and make a set of these for my boys...and maybe a more petite version for my daughter

Furrykilt, really like that sgian. I would love to find someone to build me one with a damascus blade and antler handle.

Furrycelt, I love the sgean! Antler makes gorgeous handles. And the dirk has an elegant simplicity that I think outdoes the most expensively inlaid and decorated dirk-shaped-object out there.

Thanks!
Thanks, I will pass these wonderful compliments on to my dad.
Actually, he is threatening to join our group here. It would be nice if he does, but it would be a challenge. The cyber-world is foreign territory for him.
David T., I will ask him if he is interested in making more blades. I know he just got done with a scrimshaw project, so he might be up for it.

Sweet knife, dude...
I don't get to carry a knife here at school, so I haven't bought a sgian dubh or any other knife yet.

Ooooh, yeah, man, I don't recommend that. Zero tolerance policies are hard to overcome or reason with. I read one story about a kid who got suspended for a year because he wrote his initials on a drawing he did in his notes - the teacher thought it was a gang symbol. I hate to think about what they'd do to you if you brought a knife, real or fake.
