Too funny! I feel the exact opposite, even though I feel like tartans are more traditional. For me, plain kilts provide many more coordination options, usually have pockets so I don't need to worry about a sporran, and don't require flashes, so I can decide to wear my hose up or down based on my preference and the weather not fashion.
With a tartan I have to select a matching, but not competing, shirt. Then decide on belt, sporran to match the belt, shoes to match the sporran, right colored hose, kilt pin, etc., and I also have to worry about what I might get on the kilt while wearing it. I love both, but for me, the contemporaries are easier to wear and more like pants.
