    I would also. I used to be 5'10", but I've shrunk nearly so.1 inch in the last 10 years or so. The charts say I shoulg have been around 150 at that height, but I looked and felt better at 185 as a linebacker my senior year in high school. That was back near the middle of the last century though.

    I've heard that everybody drops lots of weight on any long distance trail. It's next to impossible to eat enough to compensate for the calories expended.

    That would have to be the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail is 3100 miles!

    Sounds like you and I are in the same boat JerMc. I am 5' 9-3/4" (hey every little bit helps) and weighing in at 200 lbs. noone ever beleives it when i tell them that i am that heavy (the joy of big legs & back fat - as opposed to belly buldge). I was down to 165 a few - okay 10- years back when under extreme stress - and looked positively ILL.
    I have to remind myself to ignore what the scale says & go with what feels right to me - although i do still battle with the #200 as long as i feel good about it i aint gonna worry too much - i will worry some but not too much

    mddock58 is correct: it's the PCT. My tentative plan is to hike the CDT next year.

    Basically, backpacking 20-30 miles a day you burn around 5-6,000 calories, and you can only realistically carry enough food to give you around 4,000 calories a day, so you're in a 2,000 calorie deficit every day. Hikers eat well when they get to town! There's the joke that a thru-hiker eats a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and a large pizza, and then goes out to dinner. It's not really a joke - I've done it. I've gone through fifteen plates at an all-you-can-eat Pizza Hut buffet.

    My wife and I have been doing Weight Watchers for about 3 months, and I've lost 33 pounds so far. I'm 5'9" and currently at 193. I'd like to be at about 165 or so. I've already had to alter my USA philabeg once by moving the velcro. I don't think I could do it again without making it look funny. I'm probably going to have to sell it, and unfortunately can't afford another right now.

    Actually, I haven't worn it in about three weeks, so I'm not sure if it even fits anymore.

    Or you can take some cold weather MRE's with you. I think they go at about 6000 calories a meal.
