To deign any response only perpetuates the problem: ignore such questions, rather than stooping to their level.

    Dignity rather than a response.

Thats the way I handle it, unfortunatly you can still get in trouble. Last Oct. I was at work when someone working across the road yelled "whats under your skirt"? I ignored him but one of the guys on my crew yelled back "go ask your wife"!!

I'm with james too on this matter, but it often depends on who is asking and what their attitude is.

Sometimes I will joke "shoes and socks"
    Often I'll say "a lady doesn't ask.."
    or "a gentleman doesn't answer..."
Mostly, if it comes from louts in the street (male or female) I will pretend I haven't heard.

The worst I ever heard was on a train in denmark when a guy who could'nt speak English too well, after speaking to me in Danish (as if I look like I speak Danish!!) then said "I need to know vot is under de kilt.."
I actually got angry and said "sod off - pervert".

but that's the only time I've lost my cool, honest!!

To amplify what I mentioned in a previous post.

Of course when a friend makes a joke, I'll joke back: as when the lady asks 'have you got your frilly knickers', I'll say something like 'of course, and do you like the stockins'. As it's obvious that I'm not wearing stockings--!

However when faced with the louts, then they are best ignored, anything else only encourages them, and perpetuates the nonsense. After all we do not ask other chaps what they are wearing under their trousers, nor ladies about their apparel.

For I'm very sure thanks to comments over the years that many potential kilt wearers are put off by the whole underwear question. Too the silly comments by many kilt wearers, with their 'I'm a true Scot' remarks-suggestions. For they do not want to be associated with the whole sniggering, smutty scene.

There are also the drunken kilt wearers who expose themselves, and in general degrade us all by their antics. I think I mentioned in a post last year, that when in Prague the main square was full of drunken kilted louts being offensive to all: so much so that I went back to my flat and changed into trousers so as not to be associated in any way with them.

Having worn the kilt for as long if not longer than anyone else posting on this board-I do think it is both a practical and dashing way of dressing: but I abhor it being dragged into the gutter.

Sorry about the rant, but better to be honest about my views./

    James

Here are a few I found while surfing the net.

Me mother once told me a real lady wouldn't ask.
She was right, God bless 'er.

Tell me madam, would you go jogging without a bra?

To a lady at church: What God graced me with.

That's great! Sounds like you get good (if humorous ribbing) support from your crew!

I get more comments from them than the public at large.

No doubt . . . I'm sure a landscaping crew doesn't pull many punches, based on similar jobs I've had in the past . . .
