    I hadn't heard that. Don has always been a favorite of mine. I enjoyed him as Barney, and as Ben's neighbor when he was paired once again with Andy Griffith in Matlock.

    How very sad. He was one of the greats of comedy and an American icon. He will be greatly missed.

    I just read that actor Darren McGavin also died at age 83.

    Knotts had a gift for comedy. He chose to share that gift with the world and delighted millions. He will be missed.

    I was first introduced to him as Mr. Furley before I got to Barney Fife...have to admit that he knew what it took to get a laugh from the audience...a true comedic genius...
