Love the mini-Kabar, Ron!
Found out something about carrying the other day. I've said before that I was informed by the Assistant D.A. that a sgian is a concealed weapon in MI. Turns out he was pulling my leg. He just told me it really isn't a concealed weapon as long as it's visible, and in fact you can carry any size knife as long as it's visible. So I guess I'm going to go ahead and build that day sgian I've been wanting.

In late 2004, I purchased a sgian dubh at a local sword shop. After a short time, I discovered that it was very poorly assembled (considering what I'd paid for it). I took it apart, scrapped the cheap (painted) handle, made the new one with some materials I had on hand, and finished with several coats of marine varnish and beall buffed the works. The birds-eye maple came from a 75 year old bed frame that was de-commissioned. One of these days I plan to inlay a silver celtic cross or other design to finish it off.
The deer antler was purchased at

They had several to choose from... all one of a kind.

Early type sgian (actually an "armpit dagger") by Glenn McClain:

I'll add a dirk into the mix! Here's a ca. 1680 type, also by McClain:

One last Glenn McClain blade. This is a "ball-quillon dirk", sometimes referred to as a "whinger." They were apparently a style unique to the northeast of Scotland:

Once again, us Aussies have different rules about knives in public. As I understand it, we're not permitted to carry knives, concealed or otherwise. Not in a pouch on the belt, not in your pocket, and not in a bag. If found, you'll be arrested and charged with possession of a lethal weapon.
Which makes carrying a sgain dhub in your sock illegal...dammit.
And I like knives.. they can be such a thing of beauty.
How do the laws stand in other countries, folks?

In the US, they'll vary by state.
In my home state of Arizona, I can walk down the street with a sgian dubh in either stocking, a dirk on my belt, a broadsword on a baldric, a brace of pistols on that same baldric, and a Lochaber axe over my shoulder, and the only places I really can't go are pubs or bars that serve alcohol, banks or credit unions, or the courthouse. There are probably some other restrictions, but until very recently a number of the local grocery stores still had "Please check any weapons with the manager on duty" on their front doors.
That said, I don't have any pictures of my cutlery that I can post at the moment.

Here the law is no fixed blade knives, no blades over 3 inches, no spring action or switchblade knives of any kind.
