    The Culloden Battlefield Memorial Project

I am sure that our friends in Scotland know about this, but I thought that I would pass onto the membership.

    Culloden Memorial

Surely an indication of the level of interest in Culloden that the existing modern and spacious centre is needing replaced by a larger one. I last visited the site at Easter 2004. The existing centre already contains an exhibition hall, shop, cafe and toilets.

I was there last july with Freelander and our families.

A most unremarkable field in terms of natural beauty, but it left me overwhelmed by a sense of history and the sadness of the losses suffered there.

I was there last May. I thought what was there had a very respectful solemnity to it. I'm not sure what (if) they need to add, but I look forward to visiting the site again the next time I am there.

Did a quick tour back in the early '90s. At the time, knew nothing of my Scots or Ulster Scots heritage. I was actually there to see the spot of one of my Dad's "events" during his time in the RCAF. He was a brand new Flying Officer flying the mighty Argus (maritime patrol bomber) in the early 60's. He and his crew did a tour of the battlefield during their wonderings away from RAF Kinloss. When he returned to Canada, he found, stuffed amongst his possessions, a rather large steel sign proclaiming "The Culloden Battlefield".

T'would appear that his boys "aquired" said sign to initiate their new pilot!

He gave it to me when I joined up and it was with me for quite a few years. Someone else then liberated it from me, during a rauckus party at my place (in Ottawa, I believe). It hung in the Officer's Mess of the Canadian Airborne Regiment for some time, before being once more "aquired" by someone else.

Last I heard, it was at Dwyer Hill, home of Canada's JTF2.
