Need advice on a shirt

Here's a real quick pic of me in my Stillwater Kilt. (I really like it).



Yes I know it's not the greatest photo but I live by myself and had to use the timer. Anyway I am hoping to wear this on work on Friday but I don't really like the shirt. I've noticed a lot of people here with much better kilt coordination than myself so I thought I'd get some suggestions.

My wife thinks I should use a black shirt but she has a weird fashion sense so I'm not sure.

Well.... I'm no fashion expert, I leave that to Hamish! But I think the white shirt is fine, just button those cuffs! And if you go with the collar open, perhaps a V neck undershirt.

With that kilt, sporran and flashes, I'll say a white or off white shirt and off white hose is the ticket. A black would work too, with black or charcoal hose.

PS... hike that kilt up a little, and get a belt.

I agree with Zardoz...wear it a bit higher...must see more knee

And are you wearing the kilt somewhat off centre? Normally a vertical line in the tartan will be in the middle...not halfway between 2 lines.

Without a jacket I won't pick a pure white shirt myself.
I've a Caledonian kilt...also red as the main colour...not an easy kilt.
Earth tones like beige, olive green, khaki and grey seem to go well with it...matching hoses are also important I think.

I think that it depends on the look you are trying to portray. With the white dress shirt (do button the sleeves), white/off-white hose, semi-formal sporran, and dress black shoes, you are at least semi-formal, if not more. A tie and jacket would make it definitely formal.

If you want to go more casual, like to the office, you could try a pullover shirt, in either black or white (is there another color in that tartan, it looks like it), with matching hose and flashes (or no flashes and hose pushe down). A nice cable knot sweater would also work.

Again, what look are you trying to accomplish and where will you be wearing it?

As a general note I will have to agree that it is worn too low, and the hose should really come up higher as well. And a belt really is not optional from a fashion view point, even if it is from a functional standpoint.

As stated above, hike it up. It would look better with a belt, too.

I think the shirt is ok. A v-neck t-shirt would look better.

I go along with the consensus of hiking the Kilt up, and getting a belt.

The white shirt is fine, and if you plan on wearing a tie, go with a solid red or black tie (no pattern at all in the tie).

And before Hamish notices, I would say get a leather strap for your sporran.

You do look well in it, as it becomes you.

Looks like you have plenty of advice to help pull things together - I have just one small thing to add. Be sure to pull your kilt hose up (no sags or bags) and keep the ribs straight. Also try to keep the flashes at the same height and the hose turn-overs the same thickness.

You have a great looking kilt - and I'm sure you'll look devilishly handsome with just a few tweaks and twists.

I don't kow if there's a Kohl's department store near you but I found some nice solid color cotton twill shirts at the one near me that have been pretty good. I picked up a black and a tan and a dark green one that goes almost perfectly with the USA Hunting Stewart casual I have. Black would work well with the Royal Stewart.

My favourite dress shirt right now is a tan button-up shirt with a very subtle herringbone pattern (all in the same colour, so it's just in the weave). It goes great with oatmeal hose, and doesn't stun as much as the all-white shirt if you aren't wearing a jacket with it. I've found that the colours of a kilt make white shirts look brighter.
