    formal hose...

Yes. For example, I had my formal hose made by the Tartan Thistle in Washington State. I sent them a swatch of material left over from my kilt (always ask for the remainder of the material; you never know when it will come in handy!) and they matched the sett.

I wear a pair of "ancient red" (orange) flashes that match the ancient red in my hose and my kilt (Cumming Hunting/Buchan District, ancient colours).

Were they expensive (the hose)? Yes, but they were worth every penny I paid for them. You get what you pay for -- that is the true definition of frugality, according to my grandmother -- you may only one of something, but it's the best and will last a lifetime.

    Cheers,

    Todd

I'm still unable to wear the white socks, because to recently they were only for little girl dancers-and that sticks in my head.

I've got a pair of "Argyles" . I bought them from my clan chief. They're beautiful but bloody expensive. Thats' because they're handwoven and wonderfully colorful.

I mentioned them before (I think!) but they are worth mentioning again!

I know I'll draw the ire of some, but I think those hose are not only horrendously overpriced, but they look costume-ish. I'll take plain hose, including off-white ones, any day.

What’s with the “Hose Tops”? I don’t get it. You just let your feet sweat in your shoes?

Hose tops are for pipe bands and military. You don't need the bottoms, due to the fact that gaitors/spats are worn. There are, however, companies that sell a simple cuff, in Argyll or diced, to be worn over the regular cuffs of solid colour hose.
