It really does depend on your personal style. I find I cant wear pure white with my kilt (westmeath-mosty greens and blue) but off whites are great. I've started experimenting with all kinds of late tho,t-shirts,brown button up and even a dark pink! to be met with a fantastic response. well i liked it too. I generally dont long hose but thick sock and baggy, and roll my sleeves and all- much to the no no off some of our members here. It's a casual look of course but I seem to pull it off apparently.
