Hey Mangus,
You should have been in N.C. in the 60's when I did my time there...'65-70...
Paid a poll tax, took a literacy test to vote. State flag flew above the U.S. flag in front of schools...
Hope its better now.
You might wanna look around for a powder blue and white kilt for full effect
And, as Arnold Schwazzeneger (?spelling) said in his body building days when he was hit on by gay men...just consider it a compliment.

Well no matter who it's from it's a complement... just much more appreciated from the bonnie lasses. ;)
Internet options in Durham actually aren't bad at all. It's just a series of minor tragedies that have been kicking me down. First and foremost, Verizon is a terrible company to do business with. I gave up on getting a regular house phone and only have a cell phone now (and don't miss the land line at all). But even though I wanted internet connectivity through another company, Verizon had to run the line. They scheduled an appointment, missed it, and only days later could they tell me that DSL was not available after all in my home even though I was close enough to the switch.
Verizon also forced me to cancel my satellite TV, which needed a landline to phone home. So instead I got cable TV (Time Warner has gotten soooo much better to deal with these days). About a week later, I had internet through them as well.
Then my firewall died.
Then I build another one out of an old PC that I put the OpenBSD operating system on. It died, too.
Tonight I have to go to the store and get a cheapo Linksys firewall and cross my fingers.
So contrary to my tales of woe when dealing with the local utilities, North Carolina is actually way ahead of Pennsylvania in a lot of other areas. Better public libraries, better medical care, better roads, better shopping choices, more green space...
But lordy let me tell you I miss those Philly pubs.

I really am glad that you are enjoying yourself Magnus. Adapting to the "culture shock" of relocation and the comparison of the old and new places.

Magnus!!!!!! you disappeared on us there for a while!!! I can testify that everything this man says about his kilted adventures is true, I have witnessed. Although I doubt the Carolina girls can compare to the Philly ones when it comes to party, ah bro'? Im glad you are well, and keep posting here more often.

Inaki! Are you on dry land again these days?
We're going to try the Mardi Gras beads trick in Raleigh on St Pat's... see if it works as well as it does with the Philly girls.
I still have to get down to Savannah... I have not forgotten you my friend. When I get another comp day and you're in town, I'll have to come down for a long weekend.

I am indeed. They decided to keep me here for the work up, so I wont be venturing the wild waters of the seven seas until may. Do try the whole beads thing, it worked in Philly, it should work there too. Like I said, Ill be here until may, so you know.

I have a theory that 1 in 10 women is a kilt fetishist. All kidding aside, that when they are in the presence of a man in a kilt, they will do just about anything. Sometimes I test this theory.
One time I was lucky enough to have Inaki drive up from Savannah, GA with two lovely ladies (who had nothing to do with the bead thing... they are much classier lasses than that) to hang out with the Philly crew. We went to Finnigan's Wake, brought some Mardi Gras beads, and the first person I tried them on... well... it worked. And it worked again a second time. I don't know if the kilt had anything to do with it or not but I'd like to think it did. :-)
This being a family forum I don't think I want to get any more descriptive than that.
EDIT: I should add... kilt nights with me can sometimes get a little on the crazy side... ok sometimes they get a lot on the crazy side. Depends on how well I know the crew I'm with, etc. Inaki wanted a crazy weekend. Inaki got a very crazy weekend.
