I hear you. I started a game plan this past weekend. A neighbor and I started the weekly ritual of a brutal up hill hike near our place. Add that to the fact that I am giving up smoking in a week or two (not trying, I am doing it). It looks like my wife has gotten a position with her company that wil allow her to work from home, which means I can now walk to and from work everyday (4 km each way, uphill there, down on the way home). I am hoping to ditch a few pounds and get into a better lifestyle.
I thought about going back to the gym, but I live in a place where there is sooooo much to do outdoors, that I want to take advantage of that than a stale gym where my workout is disrupted by having to wait for equipment.

Losing weight is always a challenge, at the beginning of 2005, I started on the low carb diet and lost 30 pounds. I rewarded myself with a new tank when I hit my goal. This past year I have managed to gain about 10 pounds of it back, most of it since Thanksgiving. I am now in the process of losing that 10 pounds. Then my tank will fit the way it was intended to fit me.
I've got to stay off of the Belhaven, McEwans and single malt to make this work.
Kilts can give give us another incentive to lose weight.

An occasional single malt, say, on weekends, wont hurt you. From what I understand, your body will burn alcohol before fat, but it won't trigger your body to start looking for carbs again; you'll just go back to burning fat when the alcohol is gone.
Beer is a different matter; dere be carbs in dem dere suds!!

Output > Intake = Weight Loss
Hearty congratulations to all trying to kick the calorie habit. My doctor put it straight to me a few months ago, eat less, exercise more. He said 7 out of 10 patients he sees should lose weight or face the consequences of heart disease and diabetes. Scared me straight!
Went from 235 to 215 in 3 months. I hit a plateau when I came over to Germany last fall, but I'm back at the gym and mostly lay off the bratwurst.
Never was a beer drinker. I'm at 210 headed for 195.
A big key for me was challenges with some friends. One guy is ahead of me, but I can get there. Seeing him every day helps me to avoid the temptation to snack on the goodies at the office.
Switch to diet drinks, sugar substitutes, fruits and nuts and it is amazing to see the pounds go away.
Now I just have to conquer the Chocolate Monster. Europe has the best!
Best wishes to all,
Tom

I'm at 226 since the start of the thread (down from 229). It's slow but I think in the end that's maybe the best way. I wish I had weighed earlier because I know my clothes didn't suddenly start to fit after a 3 lb. loss. It's been coming off ever so slowly since Christmas but I haven't weighed until recently. Unfortunately I'm going to Myrtle Beach next week and I'll have to struggle to keep away from the pancake houses. Oh well, maybe I can hold serve for a week and then start again. Congratulations to all who are winning the battle!

If you keep at it, we'll have to start calling you Medium Paul.
Iolaus:
I really wish you the best of luck. I lost 25 lbs since October and am more or less at an ideal weight. I already used to eat a fairly balanced diet, although I did make some changes, and excerised 2-3 times a week; I just ate way too much. I started setting out proportions for myself and would eat outside of that. It really did the trick.
The funniest part about it was I was inspired by a friend who had gone Atkins diet and had somewhat explained the hypothesis of the diet to me. However I could never imagine eating what he ate, so I ate the exact opposite. For instance he eats eggs and bacon for breakfast and I eat yogurt and fruit. I call it the anti-Atikins diet.
Anyway, losing weight is not easy and I wish everyone here a healtier life.
