    Welcome, Munnin.

You also need to be aware that there are bunches of "Wilson" tartans because a man named Wilson cataloged them, & since they were otherwise unnamed, they were labelled Wilson and a number added.

It will be easier just to go with a Gunn tartan (Wilson is a sept of Gunn).

Welcome from me also! I second Sherry's suggestion . . . and you have further choices of modern / ancient colors for Gunn.

You may also have a New York state tartan (or wherever you and your family are from) or some other interesting district tartans.

    Happy choosing!

I was aware that William Wilson Created many (now numbered) patterns, and thought I understood which ones were considered "family". Now I am confused, what is a sept and why is that important? My uncle should be sending me a copy of the family tree which should of course only confuse me more.

I suspect that it wont matter since for reasons of cost and matching the rest of the bridal party I will probably have to go with a more generic pattern. Too bad, some of the Gunn's look nice.

A sept is a family allied with the actual Chief of a Clan. A family with no clan chief of their own, who have pledged allegiance to a specific Clan Chief.

For instance, although I am a member of Clan Farquharson, I am not a Farquharson. I am a Findlay(well, my maternal grandfather was) which is a sept of Clan Farquharson.
