    Strange question

While taking a walk at a local park today, I had an eldery gentleman stop me and ask me if I was a priest. I replied that I was of the Catholic faith, but not a priest. He said that he thought I might be a priest because of my attire. I was wearing my SWK Nightstalker with a navy blue sweatsheat, grey hose with navy blue flashes, and black shoes.

He then ask if I was Irish because of the kilt, and said he thought I must be cold. I told him that I did have Scottish/Irish ancestry, and that actually I was quite warm. I've had all the usual questions while kilted, but had never been asked if I were a priest . . . I guess, the dark, conservative colors must have confused him. We talked for awhile (he was quite alert), then parted company.

I've had similar encounters myself. I think (IMHO) that it's the similarity to a cassock that draws notice.

I get asked if I'm a priest all the time for some reason. But it's been happening for about 10 years, most of which time I was still wearing pants. I have no idea what it is about me that makes people ask that question. I've even been at Catholic bookstores and the clerks have tried to give me the clergy discount. It's really weird.

Bless you Father Darrell for being so kind and patient wtih an elderly gentleman. With good luck and G_ds grace we'll all get a chance at being elderly and still have our wits about us.

You aren't wearing your white shirt backwards under a sweater are you?

...hasn't happened in a kilt yet but I've always worn a lot of black and when I lived in a neighborhood full of aged, nearsighted Irish women they always walked up to me in the store and said stuff like, "...oh, Father, I see that you're buying a case of Miller High Lifes...do you like the Miller, then?" "Oh, Father, are you the new priest in the parish?" I am most certainly the LAST guy who has a priest outlook on life...this always happened when I was with my then-girlfriend-now-wife and she thought it was hillarious.

What can you say but "Oy! Do you have the wrong guy!"
