How big is it?
Got your attention? he he...
I'm very much a hands on person, and I don't usually like to give someone money for something I can do myself. That being said, I have designed a pattern for a sporran. I plan to produce a couple sporrans for myself. At some point, I'll graduate to making something from leather.
Anyway... the number one question I have, before I put needle to fabric. How thick (meaning from you body to the face of the sporran) is a typical sporran? I made a mock up that was 6cm thick. The bride says it's too thick. I cut it down to 3cm thick... looks decent, but I don't wanna stitch anything until I have some practical knowledge.
Anyone?

in INCHES, ::ahem:: I would say it depends on how much stuff you wanna carry, but I'd go for about 2-3 inches...

The Nativearth pouches that I use for sporrans have a 3" thickness if needed. There's a little cross hatch deal of lace on the top of each side that lets the width be adjusted.
What is sooooo weird about sporrans is that the folks that sell them, direct or resale, very very seldom mention what their dimensions are or display them near other objects you could guage their size from....not sure why the big secret...just is.

Ah, yes... all the websites I've checked out for guidance on kilt making give all the measurements in centimeters. I just went with it on my sporran. Not sure why, really.
So 2-3 inches, eh. So the 6cm I had to begin with would be about right. Silly wife!

Three inches would be awfully thick. Two is plenty.

That depends, do you want a sporran that is Decoration (<1" - the vintage seal skin I have), will carry the basic minimums (2" - basic e-bay day sporrans), or can be used to carry what you need (3"+ Freelander).

I'll be making day sporrans, basically. Nothing dressy, and definately functional. It has to at least hold my wallet and the ever present pocket knife.

Two inches will definately work. That'd be 5cm, BTW. ;)

The one I'm wearing right now, at just over one inch thick, holds everything I'd have in my pockets if I were wearing pants.

The Rob Roy style I just made is just shy of 6 cm "thick" and holds all my stuff quite nicely. It's about 18 wide and 22 deep. Be sure to allow for the seam...the gusset along the side will have to be 8 or 9 cm to allow for stitching.
