What would you do.....
Well,
I have had some fabric laying about for a time, and had sort of forgotten the details....
Anyway, I have around 6 meters (still double width) of ancient mcdonald lord of the isles, 14-16 oz. 100% wool folded up here, and can't quite decide what is to be done with it....
Well, I will have a kilt made, that is for certain, but to go with a 'tank' style, or a couple of casuals? It has a kilting selvedge - but not the best I have seen....
I was tinking perchance an '8-yarder' but machine sewn.... I don't know if I would do the monetary outlay for handsewn, not with the selvedge..... and my wife would like a 'fly/sash' to wear....
Anyway, I am just excited.... Now to get started.......

Permit me to complement you on your good fortune to have so much of that attractive tartan (got a tank in that one, myself)! Might I suggest a box pleat from Matt, a sash for you lady, and a great kilt? There just might be enough.
Bryan...it's almost a moral imperative...

I have a similar problem. I still have 6 metres (double width) of the 14oz MacKenzie Morgan tartan from Fraser & Kirkbright. Now I am planning on making a kilt from Barb's book, but do I use this (MacKenzie is a family name) or do I use the MacNeil of Barra I have sitting around and make a kilt for a friend of mine? I wonder, is it possible to make an 8 yard and a 4 yard from 6 metres of double width wool?
I am sure Matt does outstanding work, but I am a big fan of the knife pleats.

You don't need two kilts in the same tartan. Have someone machine-sew you an 8-yarder and get the sash for Mrs. Beerbecue.
Then, WEAR THEM TO A BINGHAMTON KILT NIGHT!

Well that depends. If I were getting a family tartan kilt made, I may want one for a nice 8 yard formal kilt, and also a 4 yard casual kilt.

I have been out of town the past two months on the kilt nights, so.....
But yes, I reexamined the fabric, and the selvedge is not what I would call perfect, so I think a machine-sewn is where I am headed.
I dont' really like the 4-yarders I have seen, I like the weight of all that material....
Well, gotta make a call.....

6 metres double width is 13 yards of kilt - if my arithmetic is correct, so an 8 yard and a 5 yard, or two 6.5 yards pleated differently.
I am having fun with a bolt of cloth which will give a number of different results, pleating to different stripes will give either a light, medium or dark stripe dominance in the pleats. Two kilts in the same tartan and the same length could look totally different - at least from the back.
I plan three regimental 6yarders, a 7.5yard pleated to set, and might still have fabric to spare.

Thanks Pleater, that was very helpful.

not so sure about that. While I have no problem with anyone wearing any tartan( as it shows respect to the clan or group represented by said tartan) I my self will have several tartan kilts, all of the same clan.
Then again, that is my opinion, and opinions are like kilts: everyone should have their own.
(wow...I think I've got a great t-shirt idea there!!)
