Got interested in my own heritage and started doing some research last year, then found out about the Chicago Celtic festival that was happening last September, and decided I wanted to go in a kilt, so got a SWK. That got me into a kilt, then the sheer comfort kept me in one!

I'm blaming it all on Duncan.

I'd seen kilts, knew about kilts, knew that my mom's family was descended from Scottish immigrants to the US and that they were, by far the most colorful, talented and interesting ancestors that I had...I even have the facial features that come from that side of the family...no idea if the family ever had any tartan assigned to them (thanks to xmarks for the subsequent education on that topic!).

And I was in a total blue funk one night and was flipping around and got hooked on Monarch of the Glen. And somehow the seed got planted in my mind...mostly because of Hamish Clarke's character and the way that the kilt was just his everyday outfit and he wore it like it was nothing out of the ordinary. And that got me thinking that it was another clothing option and it obviously could be worn casually without the Prince Charlie jacket and all the trimmings...so why not? Mind you, I am surrounded by family and friends who think that this is a dubious endeavour..."Oh, you're wearing your kilt again....how nice...just what, exactly, is your problem?" But, as we say in Chicago, "screw 'em". I'm finding that just carrying on as normal lets people know that it IS just normal and the "disruption" dies down pretty quickly. As many of you have found, a lot of guys do ask serious questions about the kilt and want to know where to get one...that's gratifying. I expect that there are a lot of potential kilt wearers out there who would jump on the bandwagon if they had the chance. One of my stock lines has become: "...hey...it's the latest thing...by summer you'll ALL be wearing them, so get your orders in early to avoid the rush!"

So MOTG sort of tipped the balance for me...it made the kilt just look cool and presented it as another clothing option...hey, why not?

I've been to a few highland games and renn fairs. I saw a Utilikilt at a renn fair and checked them out online. Then I found X-Marks and found out there were alternetives to the traditional kilt.It was downhill from there.

I had thought about getting a kilt for many years. My grandmother was a McKean and I always wanted to explore that link. However, the prices of the traditional kilt always made me stop.

Then last year I finally found an inexpensive kilt to wear for National Tartan Day. Shortly after that, I found this board and fell victim to the addiction.

He was the tipping point for me too. Now, I have always loved the look of a kilt - and the sight and sound of bagpipers marching down the street has always brought a lump to my throat. Then two things converged in my life. To honor my dad I decided to do our family genealogy and discovered most of it lead back to Scotland, Ireland, and Wales (surprise!!!!) AND I discovered MOTG on our local PBS station. The stars came into alignment and I realized that a kilt could be worn at any time. Finding XMarks gave me the courage to say "why not me?" and links to resourses like SWK and USAK made the whole thing economically possible. Like many here, I want have the wardrobe that would allow me to wear a kilt every day of the week...
