Got a PM asking how it was going, so I figued I copy my answer to the thread.

Just wondering how Mr. Atkins is treating you. I had great success the first time I tried it a couple of years ago, losing over 40 lbs. (though I eased into Weight Watchers for the last few). However, I've tried to do Atkins a couple of times since and I've had little or no luck. I lose a lb., I gain a lb. I'm afraid to keep eating the meat/cheese/eggs diet for much longer. Seems like the food choices died out with Atkins and it's just hard to be around other people and try to maintain the low-carb thing; they get cheese pizza, you get a piece of cheese. Anyway, ********* has had the same experience and I was curious as to whether you were having success this time around. Good luck with it!
Well, I've only really been back at it for 10 days now, so I still consider myself to be in the induction phase - you know; triggering my body to start burning fat.

I dropped about 5 pounds in the first 5 or 6 days, but that'll happen with any diet. This morning, I stepped on the scale, and I was down to 233 - 234; that's the first time I've dropped below 235 (morning weight) since I started, and I'm hoping that it means my metabolism has shifted to burning the fat.

The food selection is pretty limited; what I've done is I go to the health-food store, and stock up on about 10 or 15 different flavors of lo-carb/high protien meal replacement bars - 2 each. That way I have a varied diet, both in flavor and texture, and in the balance of nutrients the different companies consider important. I try to start the day with a thin marinated breakfast steak (beef or pork, $5 for 4 - 5 steaks) and scrambled eggs if I have the time - takes about 5 to 10 minutes to cook up; the meal replacement bars keep me on the "every 3 hours" schedule during school in the daytime, and I just resign myself to meat and cheese in the evening for now. Later I'll be adding some vegies or doing salads with some diced meat for dinners.

It's amazing how we start caring what we look like once we start caring what we wear isn't it? I'm doing the Bill Phillips "Body for Life" program myself. His companion book "Eating for Life" is great too. I'm not overly zealous about it, I don't plan or expect to look like a body builder, but it works for me. I lost 35 lbs. and felt better than I had for years. I not only lost inches and gained muscle but I went for 18 months with no acid reflux symptoms and almost no use of Mylanta. A neck injury flared up though and I backslid a bit the last couple of months so I gained 8 lbs. back. I've also increased my need for Mylanta. Started back on the exercise program last week.

    Iolaus,

Keep up the good work, you're doing well! Breyer's makes some great low-carb ice cream, the flavors are limited, but it is a great treat.

I'm still working on losing the 8-10 lbs I gained over the holidays, I have lost about 3 pounds of it, still have a few more pounds to go.

Yeah, it's a great treat, but for me, it has unintended consequenses. I could eat a quart of regular ice cream with no ill effect, but just a bowl of that stuff gives me the farts something fierce!!! I don't know what the problem was, but that ice cream and I did not work well together!

There was a lo-carb chocolate covered ice cream bar that I could eat safely, I'll have to try and remember what it was.

ice cream and gas...ah, yes, you're an adult now. There comes a point where our bodies don't make as much lactase as we used to, and when we don't digest it, our intestinal flora DOES.

OK. Enough of my mollygagging, or hobbymolling, or mockiwalling, or whatever it is. I'm joining this thread. I actually started yesterday, but today I'm going public with it.

Starting weight = 255 plus or minus a few on any given day
    Goal weight = 215

Target time? Mid- July (in time for backpacking)

I'll post in here on a weekly basis, if you're up for it Iolaus... What say?

Naw, give me a pint of Haggen Das, and it's gone! - No problems. It's something about the diet ice cream.

Sure, join in; I was going to post week-end updates anyway.

I'm happy to say that I'm now down to 210! I can't wait to get back below 200 lbs. I know it will mean either getting a lot of kilts altered or getting a lot of new kilts, but I'd really love to get back down into the 160 to 170 range. I won't be as skinny as in my fire department days, but at least it'll be somewhat closer to my ideal weight.

I am still Atkinsing - I use Dr A's New Diet Revolution, a late edition - the earlier ones are not so good.

Today for dinner I ate roast chicken with mushrooms and a salad then strawberries and cream. That's a diet?

It seems to keep working. My Black Stewart is too big again. Maybe if I just trim a couple of inches off the aprons I can get away without disturbing the pleats.

At least the kilts I've made myself are fairly easy to adjust, though I did not expect to have to do it quite so often. Perhaps by the end of this year I will have shrunk down to a fairly consistent waist size. I find that my waist is the most variable measurement I have. It seems to be the place of choice for both weight gain and loss.

I was trying to go slowly - to give the skin time to adjust. I don't want to look as though I am wearing a kilt even when I'm not.

Next update: Another two pounds lost! The past couple of mornings, I've weighed in at right around 230. I go to bed around 232-ish, but that's because I drink a lot of water throughout the day; by the time I get up, I've either used up or peed off the excess, so I'm pretty comfortable claiming the two pound loss.

...and I don't have to pull the strap as tightly to get to the last hole on my Weathered Lamont. This sorta' worries me though; it's the nicest "traditional" I have - the 2005 Standard NS SWK that I have pales to insignificance in comparison. I have to ask myself, "how soon will it be too big?" I can't really afford to buy more right now, although that new Saffron kilt is calling to me...

Woo hoo!! It's official; I'm losing weight - 230 last week to 226-7 (it's hard to tell from 6' away) yesterday and today!

I kinda' wish I had one of those doctor's balance beam scales, then I could keep pushing the little weight further and further over. - Alright, I admit it, I'm excited!
