"Hunting attire"

I was wondering
What is considered the "Hunting attire" that Thompson mentions in his book
Is it informal dress or a type of semi- formal?
Are there certain things that mark someone as being in hunting attire

If that was Hunter Thompson, I'd guess a Hawaiian shirt, shorts, a bucket hat, some big aviator sunglasses and a cigarette holder....

Here is a copy of my response to the same inquiry in the Kilt Accessories forum:

My "hunting attire" comment referenced my belief that much of what we today call highland day wear dress seems to derive from Hunting or shooting attire of the last 150 years or so i.e: Earth or heather tones, and subdued fittings and so on. Something a ghillie or gentleman might wear in the field while hunting, fishing, shooting or otherwise enjoying the outdoors proper. Thus the use of Tweeds, lovatt or heather colors, brown leather, brass or bronze fittings, stag horn, hunting style dirks and sgian dubhs, weathered or muted tartans etc.

I would think that a more formal, silver or polished brass colored metal cantle etc. would, with the right design style, turn any fur or partial fur sporran into a full fledged evening wear accoutrement.

'Hunting Attire' would be general daywear, ie: nothing with silver showing (someone once wrote 'because it would frighten away the animals' ! ). Basically a kilt in a darker hunting tartan (as opposed to a bright dress tartan - like 'Stewart Hunting' as opposed to 'Royal Stewart') with a plain leather sporran and a tweed jacket (not black with silver buttons). The sgian dhu would be horn handled rather than silver mounted and you could wear an antique brass belt buckle rather than a bright silver one. To compleat the outfit a real 'kiltie' would wear a plain Balmoral bonnet with his clan crest on
(this is of course silver but you can get the duller pewter ones). I think this is the image Thompson had when he wrote about 'Hunting Attire' and in fact I wear my day outfit probably more than I do my dress one.
