As others have mentioned hiking socks are often found in wonderfully neutral colors making them ideal for kilts but tend to be very expensive. Might I suggest picking them up at discount from Sierra Trading Post. They have an outlet in Reno, Nevada I used to go to all the time and you can find all sorts of great finds. Here's the link for their men's socks:

Yup, they, and Sportsman's Guide have been the ruin of my credit card; I'm always finding new boots that I want, at 50 - 80% off; ...and sweaters, and coats, and shirts, and... and...  Stop, take a deep breath...in, out, in out...
