Hi Bubba! How have you been?
If IRC isn't 'warmed up' enough for you, might I direct you over to Usenet?

I wasn't talking about limited access so much as simply not having it show up when you click the "New Posts" button. That way, only the people actively following the conversation would be subjected to it; to all others, it would just drop off the radar, unless they chose to access it from the Forums page.
You all make good points, I guess I just like to stir the pot occassionally. Sometimes things get said that I want to answer, and I know that if I do, I'll get the thread shut down pretty quickly; I'm sure there are others who feel the same way on different issues as well. Back-fence discussions are fine, but they're limited to the knowledge of the two individuals, leaving the original impetus of the debate unanswered in the forum. It gets frustrating sometimes.

Announcing the X Marks the Scot International Convention
Maybe what we really could use is an X Marks the Scott convention! I wish we could all meet up somewhere comfortable, just us guys, lots of beves and we could show off all our kilts and accessories. Of course there would be reps there from all the kilt makers and Scottish accessory suppliers and we could talk, sing, swap stories/kilts/pins, etc., try out some single-malts and just have a chance to meet and get to know each other better.
Oh well, I guess I'm still in the "honeymoon" phase of wearing kilts and being on this board.
Cheers!

It really kinda defeats the meaning of the word "Community" to have to self censor all the time.
Actually, I think that would be the perfect meaning for "community".

I suppose we could discuss other subjects within reason in Off Topic. My experience is that this is one of the more civilised forums, possibly because we don't get into heated arguments about politics then start calling other forumites ignorant or short-sighted simply because their outlook is from a different colour of the political spectrum.

I don't remember the name, but I read once that a philosopher said:
"In matter of values, there's not base for agreement,... it's because of that that in last instance we derivate to insult".
I'm not also sure if it was a textual exposition, but the sense was there.
I like this site the way it is... there are left-handed and conservatives, gays and "macho-men", yanks and europeans, elder and younger guys and girls,.... we all know each other more or less,... we drop on every post a little part of us, and , on any case,... we are not here to argue or discuss about values,.... they just get out on a basis of respect and sharing spirit.
.... is this a kilted Disneyland?... then I like it, or maybe I could say that I need it as it is?
ˇSalud!

My point was the one dimensional view we get of each other here. Yes, self-censoring ourselves for abusive and overtly offensive behaviour is an aspect of "community."

Iolaus, your idea is not without merit. It's just that Hank has put considerable effort into making this a kilt forum and if we open up the guidelines for acceptable discussion, we begin to erode all his effort.
Most of us frequent multiple forums (I'm ashamed to say how many I participate on ), and if we see that someone might enjoy the discussion on another forum, there's nothing wrong with whispering that into that person's ear. I regularly see Colin on another forum, with a lot of emphasis on the restoration of Scotland's freedom. Bubba has been a regular visitor to my own forum. I'm sure both will agree that some of the topics that are off-limits on this forum are part and parcel of what make those two forums tick.
So, there are options available to all of us. And those options are what allow X Marks to remain the excellent kilt forum that it was designed to be.

Good point, Mike!, this is after all a kilts forum and many of us frequent other forums covering our other interests. As I use the same user name on all the forums on which I post, anybody who wants to find out what other interests they have in common with me needs only to look for search engine hits against my user name. Or they can look at my website.

While I can see and agree with Iolus' point about the viewpoint you get of the others on the board being somewhat restricted by the limitations imposed on topics discussed on the board, I must acknowledge that this is a board for talking about kilts and kilt related topics, and that is where its focus should remain.
As an inveterate shi... I mean POT stirrer (sorry couldnt resist) and a member of a variety of groups that have been oppressed in all sorts of wonderful ways I am always ready to wage in swinging when I feel my rights are being disrespected. ANd being a little on the vocal side, i have found myself going toe to toe with similarly expressive folks time & time again...
I find that, by keeping the conversations kilt focused, this board is the ideal place for discussing KILTS. For the other topics there are plenty of other venues where one is free to climb as high on the soapbox as they like (which is not necessarily a good thing to do while kilted - imagine the view from below...) and where you can rant and rail with like minded folks to your hearts content.
This is a safe place to talk about KILTS, kilts & more kilts which is exactly the way it should be.
