I have both a Black Stewart and Black Watch from SWK. I tend to wear lighter and brighter colors with the Black Watch because it's dark enough on it's own and I prefer the contrast. I find the Black Stewart a little more versatile so that almost any red, white, green, yellow or black can be worn and still make the kilt stand out. I've even worn it with a blue sportcoat and it looked fine.

Bottom line is what everybody else is saying - pick the one you like best and you'll feel better about it. Just be aware that you didn't even mention accessories yet and that's a whole other ball of fun.

Wow, lots of great advice, but I was expecting that from this bunch. I think Black Stewart will be the one, but now I have more ideas for the next kilt. The Caledonia looks fantastic, it's on the list now.

Accessories: oh boy! To start out, I will need hose, flashes, kilt pin, a belt and a sporran. Then I will need more hose, more flashes, and maybe another sporran.
Then I will have to get another kilt to go with all the hose and flashes. That will require another kilt pin or three, then probably some nice shirts and a tie or two and of course another kilt! I haven't even ordered the first one and already I feel the addiction taking hold!

That definetly is how it begins, a wonderful feeling isn't it?

    Timber,

It don't matter much what your first kilt is....there'll be MANY more

You can't go wrong with USAKilts.

I just ordered my third from Rocky, my Macdonald clan tartan. Already have the Thompson gray and the Ireland's National from him - all semi-traditionals.

Pics in my gallery if that helps any.

    Good choice.

It is quite a striking tartan but not too buzy, rather classy.
