What is Historic Scotland's dress code?
Was your friend wearing casual attire besides the belted plaid? Open-toed sandals? A t-shirt? Obviously, despite their accents, those working at Stirling Castle must have recognised a kilt when they saw one. There may be other factors at play here.

Having worn the kilt to places of interest/museums-military museums and the like all over the UK and much of Europe, I can say that I've only had positive responses.
So as others have said, there must be more to this story, and I'd be interested to know what.
Having said that, on occasion I have encountered enactors and the like, not of necessity highland: where my own inclination would be to direct them to the nearest asylum or police cell.

I suspect it may have more to do with the persons status as a protester that the belted Plaid, Ive seen loads of people dressed in all kind of period costume/modern little kilts. However as the custodion of Stirling castle Historic Scotland is entitled to impose conditions of entry, and failure to comply will result in non admittance, as Ive said before Ive seen all sorts of things worn there so its unlikely the Belted plaid is the specific reason for non-entry, has Historic Scotland given any specific reasons in writing for this gentlemans situation? was alchohol a factor?

When I was visiting Scotland about 5 years ago, one of the only two people I saw kilted was at Stirling Castle, and he was a Scot leading a group of tourists through.
That was a modern kilt, mind you. The other kilt I saw was a Holywood style ("FREEDOM!") "great kilt" on another tour guide at the Wallace monument down the road.

Another question we should ask would be "How was he wearing the belted plaid?"
Did he have on decent shoes underneath? Did he have on a shirt underneath? Were the other items of clothing in compliance with any dress code involved?
Without a photo of the exact outfit I think that we should reserve judgement until more information is available.
