Aye, if you're not wearing a high-necked jacket or doublet. One would not, however, wear a Jacobite or other full-sleeved shirt under a dress doublet!

When I was in my 20's, it was commonplace to wear a cravat (usually in Paisley patterned fabric) with an open necked shirt, with or without a jacket. With a Harris tweed jacket and grey flannel trousers, this was typical week-end casual wear!!

I am now inspired to track down a Highland Cravat for informal wear with a Jacobite shirt and a leather potaine. Watch this space...........

    Thanks for all the input.

Does the neckline/collar of the Montrose look like these jackets?

    Thanks again.

Not really. The neck line is more open at the collar, something like a priests collar. I am sure there is a good likeness of them on the different highland outfitters websites. You can also see the collar quite clearly on Hamish's picture.

Paco, take a look at the CF green coatee (BW-style) on that site. Nice turnback/tails.

That's a nice jacket! I'm only thinking that there should be an opening for the jabot.

Partly! The Montrose and GT Doublets have stand-up collars, but there is a wide opening at the front to allow the jabot (or cravat) to fall through. Like this:-

Glad to see Hamish is keeping us right !

I have been looking for a new evening jacket and something "different". I havre already found a Highland Cravat (otherwise known as a Stock) at www.highlandclans.co.uk

Ah, but Paco doesn't like the frilly stuff, so this is a great compromise.

    Thanks!

From what I remember of the pictures I've seen, the Paisley cravats are worn tucked in to the neck opening of the shirt, right? To me that's a different look than the ends of the cravat hanging down in the picture you supplied from TartanWeb.

I like the look of the picture from TartanWeb . . . I had seen that a couple of years ago and have thought I would like to have a cravat like that, but haven't figured what kind of an occasion I'd wear it to (I'd also like a Montrose doublet . . .).

If you're going to go without the "frilly stuff," I think a collar like on that jacket would be right sharp!
