Travelling with your kilt...

Hi, gang!

It's been a coon's age since I flew anywhere...before 9/11 anyway. I guess my concern is how do I pack my sgian dubh so it arrives WHERE I do, and not in the Confiscation area at Atlanta or some such place? Sorta gallows humour, but I just bought several Swiss Army Knives on eBay from a seller who, get this, offers these nice knives from the Hartsfield Airport Confiscatorium!!

I have taken some care to get my three Sgian Dubhs from good vendors and I sure DON'T want to lose 'em!!

Knives have to be in checked luggage and not carry-on. Here's a link to the TSA site which explains everything.

Put them in your checked luggage, not your carry-on, and you'll be fine.

Notice that for knives, you cannot have them on your person or in carry-on luggage, but it says "Yes" you can take them in your checked-in baggage.

Personally, before going to the airport, I'd call the airline & confirm that you can pack your Sgian Dhus in your checked luggage.

I ship a leatherman (with knife blade of course) almost every where I go and have probably flown >50 times since 9/11. I always pack it in my check baggage and have never had an ounce of trouble. Based on my experience, I would highly doubt that you'd run into the slightest bit of trouble.

The only thing that would make me think twice is if they are worth a lot. I've never had luggage completey lost but it's shown up several days late many times (I'll get you American Airlines!!!!)

Like everyone else has said, it will have to go in your checked baggage. Your only concern will be if you lose your luggage, which really doesn't happen very often but is a possibility.

As one needs to put the sgian dubh in his checked luggage, I'd say leave your favorite ones at home, not wearing one at your destination. If you need do one to complete your outfit, get a hold of sgian dubh you don't mind losing just in case your bag is ransacked or lost.

If you don't have any checked luggage then you may want to consider one of the safety Sgian dbuhs without a blade. Another alternative would be to have it overnighted to your destination.

My dirk has been to Scotland and back, twice. Checked luggage, in a sheath and wrapped in bubble wrap so it cannot possibly injure a luggage handler. It's not been a problem yet.

ah... but do ya also know the best way tae pack yer kilt?

I learned fraime my faither-in-law... hae tae roll the kilt along it's side, apron in, keeping all pleats intact... then rolling a nylon stocking up over the kilt to keep it in its "sausage" like shape...

when you arrive at the hotel you roll down the stocking and you have a wrinklefree kilt!

works perfect everytime...
