I think a black leather dress sporran is versatile enough to wear with both a semi-formal and a formal outfit. The fish leather is interesting, but its color might limit the tartans it can be worn with. Stiffness seems to be a common drawback of this type of sporran.

I got mine with the red leather insert specifically to coordinate with my MacIan tartan which is mostly red, but yeah one color wouldn't work with all tartans.
