Go for a bit of flair, I say, and try red silk boxers. That way, someone can suggest to the children that if they're looking your direction during a climb, and they see a flash of red, they're observing you much too closely, and the trail not closely enough...

I'd suggest looking at the web pages for Campmor and Sierra Trading post...notably Campmor. They always have "wicking" underwear on sale...I would expect that the problem with cotton is that it gets damp and hold the moisture near the skin...the wicking stuff is supposed to....well...wick it away.

If you must wear underwear while hiking, I'd recommend a pair of boxer-briefs in polypro - either REI or Sierra Trading Post would have excellent choices. By choosing boxer-briefs you don't need the Body Glide.

However, I'd still suggest - when you can, because I understand your concern about hiking with children - that you air out the boys when you can.

I have to agree with Andrew, but an inexpensive alternative, and what I'd personally recommend for the venture you pose, is the Old Navy Men's Boxer Briefs 2-pack. At just $5.00 a pair, the price is hard to beat. They last a bit longer than el-cheapo undies (like Joe Boxer, Hanes or FOTL) and cost much less than their more-expensive competition (Ralph Lauren, et al).
