Monarch's Tartan
I was just watching an episode of Monarch of the Glen. At the end there was a christening scene with all the MacDonalds down by the Loch. Does anyone know what tartan they were wearing? I've seen somewhere there is a MacDonald Tartan that is universal, is that true? If so, what is it called?

Try this:

There are too many MacDonald tartans to describe. There are about 70 to 80 alone here. I wear a Traditional Modern MacDonald tank. Not really sure what was on the show but mine is predominently red and green.

I believe this to be the MacDonald of Clanranald (Modern Colours) tartan

Sorry, I cannot help with this one.

tartans...
As Hamish mentioned, Hector wears the MacDonald of Clanranald, but both Archie and Golly wear the standard MacDonald tartan. The latter is an example of someone wearing the tartan of a surname out of loyalty to a Chief. Since Golly Mackenzie is employed as a ghillie, first Hector, and then to Archie, he wears their tartan.
Cheers,
Todd

Aye, we Macdonalds are a prolific lot.
Knowing my heritage I've chosen three Macdonald tartans. The Macdonald of Kingsburgh which is as close as I can get to where my ancestors came from, just up the road in Uig. The Macdonald Lord of the Isles Ancient Hunting (I think, many names for it - but love the green on green). And what's sold as the generic Macdonald my most kiltmakers.
Ain't it nice to have so many choices of tartan and so many cousins?

Just for reference - here's the tartan I think Kiltman is talking about...

Ah, but Todd, let's not forget that after Hector is gone, Golly seems to switch to the Weathered MacKenzie tartan (his surname on the show).

Tom Baker is Donald MacDonald (no, I am serious). He played Hector's younger brother who returns to Glenbogle in series 6. On the left of Duncan are Ewan (joined in series 5) and Jess (Golly's daughter).
