    Douglas House Kilts?

I am a new member and as yet unkilted. I came across Douglas House of Scottish Designs while surfing for kilts. They have a budget kilt for $175. They limit it to 4 tartans and it is made to your measure. An e-mail solicited the fact that they are made with 8 yards of 13 oz wool. This seems like a reasonable entry level kilt to me? Anybody familiar with them, the quality of their work, their cusomer service? Since they are in Georgia I'd just as soon send my custom to a southern company. Thanks for the help. I've learned lots from ya'll already.

    YMOS,
    Tony

The address is a residence, it must be a mail order/internet operation.

If money is short, I would suggest this kilt as your first forray into the kilted world. Tartan hiker has one, and I'll be ordering three here in the next few days.

the link below is Tartan Hiker's review of a blackwatch tartan kilt available on ebay for ~$50. Sounds like a great starter kilt!

    Shane,
That was my thought exactly. If these are the same kilts, they are not wool, they are the same acrylic as Stillwater kilts. Anyone interested in these would be better buying a Standard or Heavyweight from SWK.

    From the web site:
These kilts are made to the traditional Scottish design.
Usually that is code for "these kilts are not made in Scotland." And at that price, I can tell you they are not made in America... or Canada... or anywhere in what we would consider the Western world.

I've been sent for alteration a few kilts that were labelled on the inside with the phrase "traditional Scottish design" and not a one of them was actually made in Scotland. Nor were they wool, 8 yards, or hand sewn.

Email him again. I'm guessing he's talking about his "Standard Kilt" when he says it is 8 yards of 13 oz wool.

    Aye,
    Matt
