Good thing you're kidding because I even asked the wife before I got the material: "This doesn't look like the Clan MacPicnic tartan does it?"

I'm thinking very seriously about buying Barb's book Friday. The depressing thing is that all my belongings get packed up and shipped off to Maine Tuesday, so I won't be able to start in on a kilt. I'm hoping that I can translate all the hand stitches in the book to something on a machine... I have neither the time nor patience to make a kilt by hand.

Is the MARPAT the new digital camo?

At some point, after the new USN BDU style working uniform goes into production, I'm going to look for some of that material to do a kilt in. I'd also like to do one in some of the USMC digital desert camo.

Camo kilts are WAAAY easier to make... no worries about the sett lining up.

All I need to do now is figure out how to pleat to the stripe.

This is my desert digital camo, with the globe and anchor mark, and the waist lining inside is a very nice Hawaiian hibiscus camo (pic to follow later.) The 10 pleats at the hip are merely measured out at 2-inch reveals and 4-inch hiddens; at the waist 1 1/2-inch each; not hard at all. The pleats are individually pinned and sewn down from the outside, with matching thread, right along each edge. Waistband and fringe are by machine. All exposed edges are bound with a deep zig-zag, and the inside edges of the lower pleats are stitched right along the edge.


There is no "stripe" in camo, but there are repeats (which can be safely ignored.) Pleating to the stripe in a plaid, or a tartan, is easier than pleating to the sett, and it uses a little less fabric. The choice of which "stripe" to use can greatly affect the final "look" of the back of the kilt, depending on whether you choose a prominent light stripe, a prominent dark stripe, or you use a "stripe" from the middle of the background color blocks. Barb's book will explain and illustrate all this.

Keep sewing; the more practice you get before The Art of Kiltmaking arrives will stand you in good stead.

1) When you figure it out, PLEASE share the details. I've tried to no avail to produce something like that or a UK on several occasions.

WOW! I really need to find a place to find those fasteners and a belt like that. Need to find a source for that material also.

Thanks. I was shocked that day. No one on base even flinched at the fact I was clad in kilt. I figured of all places, I'd catch flack there.
